The table illustrates the amount of money that customers were charged for a cup of coffee in 6 different Australian cities in 2010 and 2014.
Overall, there was an upward trend in the prices for most of the cities except for Brisbane, with the sharpest increase in Melbourne and the slightest in Canberra. Sydney maintained their position as the place where the costs of coffee were the highest in both years.
As can be seen from the table, dramatic growths could be observed in Melbourne and Sydney. The cost of a coffee cup in Sydney was $2.8 and $3.17 in 2010 and 2014 respectively with a rise of 13.2% over 4 years. A similar pattern could be seen in Melbourne, which had the second highest prices in the list. In this city, the numbers experienced the biggest improvement of 20.8%, rising from $2.4 to $2.9.
Brisbane was the only exception where the price of this beverage remained stable over the period. As in other cities, there were moderate fluctuations in their numbers. Consumers at Canberra could afford this drink with the lowest price of $1.6 in 2010 and at just $1 higher after four years. Perth raised their figures by 7.1% to $2.25 in 2014 which was slightly higher than the price of $2 in Adelaide in the same year.
